The Pentagon has authorized senior managers to freeze civilian hiring, curtail travel and training, dismiss temporary workers, review contracts, and cancel some weapons maintenance because of uncertainty over the budget, according to a memo today from Deputy Secretary Ashton Carter.

Citing the lack of congressional action on this year’s defense budget and the threat of automatic cuts in March, Carter said, “it is prudent to take certain steps now in order to help avoid serious future problems.”
