The pastor of a Connecticut church died from an apparent heart attack in front of his congregation after confessing an affair that had happened years before.

Bishop Bobby Davis was confronted by the congregation Sunday at Miracle Faith World Outreach Church in Bridgeport, Conn., the Connecticut Post reported.

"After the service Sunday, the bishop's family asked us to remain in the church and the bishop confessed to something that happened long ago," Judy Stovall, an elder at the church, told the newspaper. "He wanted to come clean with all of us. He wanted to ask our forgiveness."

Stovall said the congregation shouted at Davis, the pastor who founded the church in 1967.

"We were shouting, 'We forgive you, we love you,' but the stress of all of it — he had a heart attack," she said. "I held his head as he lay on the floor."

"Our congregation is hurting now," she added.

According to the Post, an anonymous woman who was outside the church in Bridgeport said that the shouting was loud enough that she could hear it outside but that she couldn't make out what was being said.

Another source told The Christian Post that Davis had been pushed by his wife, Christine Davis, to make the confession to the congregation.

"I'm told that when he walked through the door she basically told him, 'Tell them what you just told me,' which is what induced the heart attack, because it's not like he was walking into it knowing," the source said.

Bridgeport Police told the Christian Post that they reviewed video footage taken by someone who was inside the church at the time and that from what they could tell, "there is no criminal aspect to it."

The official cause of death is pending review, the state Medical Examiner told the Connecticut Post.
