Legislators in Oregon are mulling a bill that would require schools to display the American flag in every classroom.

In addition, the proposed legislation would give students time to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at least once a day, according to The Oregonian.

The chief sponsor of the bill, being weighed in a House committee meeting on Monday, is Republican state Rep. Sal Esquivel.

The law would increase the number of opportunities for students to recite the pledge, from at least once a week to at least once a day, The Oregonian reports.

In addition, it would extend the flag display and pledge opportunity requirements to public charter schools.

If the measure becomes law, students would not be required to participate in the pledge. They also would not be punished if they did not participate.
