Sierra Club Sues Ohio Over Drilling Plans

By Sandy Fitzgerald   |

The Sierra Club is suing the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to force the agency to release its plans for allowing oil and gas drilling in state parks.

Ohio Sierra Club officials claim the agency has ignored its requests to examine what amounts to public documents since a request was first submitted in October, according to the Columbus Dispatch. The agency has not responded.

“A six-month timeline to get a request granted is completely unreasonable,” state Sierra Club manager Jed Thorp told the newspaper.

Ohio state parks and public property were opened to drilling under a new state law that was passed last September. Natural resources officials were charged with developing the terms and conditions for leases.

Natural resources spokesman Carlo LoParo said the agency was not aware of the pending lawsuit.
