Social conservatives have a lot more passion against President Barack Obama than they do support for his GOP challenger Mitt Romney.
Those sentiments were borne out in interviews conducted by
Politico with two dozen conservatives at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C., over the weekend. To be sure, the interviewees are excited by Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan.
But when it comes to Romney himself, “it’s not excitement, it is fear — fear of the other guy,” Dolores Taylor of West Harrison, N.Y., told Politico.
“Excited doesn’t seem to be the right word — I’d say energized, because I’m so angry about what’s going on.”
Jackie Lewis of Ashburn, Va., feels the same way. “Total fear” of Obama is what has her voting for Romney. “We can’t take four more years of this,” she told Politico.
Conservatives at the conference expressed concern about a drift to socialism under Obama, the healthcare reform law, and the president’s effort to protect abortion and to fight the sanctity of traditional marriage.
Mary Carbone, who hails from a small town outside Pittsburgh, views it in the broadest terms. “I am running across more and more Americans who understand what this administration is trying to do: They’re trying to destroy our country, trying to destroy our economy,” she told Politico. “A lot of Americans are very angry and very upset about that.”
The socialism theme was front and center for Mark Luther of Kennet, Mo. Most of his acquaintances who are Republican “are afraid of a second [Obama] term, so much so that they think if Obama gets re-elected, the country will become socialist,” he told Politico.
