Six out of 10 Americans disapprove of President Barack Obama’s economic policy, according to a new Gallup poll.

This result is similar to the public’s weak support for him on that issue recorded in February and in 2011. An even higher portion of Americans – 64 percent – disapprove of his handling of the budget deficit. A majority - 58 percent - disapprove of his policies to create jobs, and 54 percent oppose his immigration policy.

The president received less than 50 percent disapproval only on his foreign policy (45 percent), his education policy (43 percent), and his terrorism policy (35 percent).

And in only one of those areas did Obama receive majority approval – terrorism (58 percent). On foreign policy, he garnered 48 percent approval, and on education 49 percent approval.

Obama's ratings on the economy compare quite unfavorably to the previous three incumbent presidents who were successful in gaining re-election: George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Ronald Reagan.

Obama’s 36 percent approval rating on the economy pales in juxtaposition to Bush's 46 percent rating in August 2004 and Clinton’s 54 percent rating in August 1996.

To be sure, Obama’s 48 percent approval rating on foreign policy beats each of the last six elected presidents at this point in their White House tenure. Obama’s number on this issue is close to incumbent winners Bush (44 percent) and Clinton (53 percent), but also to incumbent loser George H. W. Bush (50 percent).

In any case, the economic rating is likely most important, writes Gallup’s Lydia Saad. “It appears that the economy approval rating is consistently the closest to overall job approval, and therefore arguably the most relevant,” she says.
