For her first cause as First Lady of North Carolina, Ann McCrory has literally gone to the dogs.

McCrory, wife of Republican Gov. Pat McCrory, wrote to a House Committee in support of a proposed bill to outlaw puppy mills, where dogs are bred in inhumane conditions, according to The Charlotte Observer.

"Passing legislation to establish basic standards of care for large commercial breeding facilities is a very important issue to me and to people across our state," McCrory wrote.

"These policies increase our quality of life in North Carolina and ensure better care for dogs across our state."

The bill, which would establish strict standards for facilities that keep 10 or more dogs of breeding age, is expected to go to the House floor shortly.

The McCrorys, both longtime animal lovers, own a brown Labrador retriever named Mo.
