Missouri voters have approved a constitutional amendment dealing with prayer and religious expression.

The proposal approved Tuesday states people can pray so long as they do not disturb the peace.

It also prohibits requiring students to participate in school assignments or educational presentations that violate their religious beliefs.

Currently, the Missouri Constitution allows people to worship according to their beliefs.

It also bars disqualifying people from office, testifying or serving on a jury based upon religion.

Supporters say the constitutional amendment protects students and ensures that prayer receives the same protections as other types of speech.

Opponents argued the measure could cause confusion and is likely to spark court cases.
