Sen. Mike Lee said Monday the federal government is being "coercive" on issues like contraception.

The Utah Republican was a guest on "The Wilkow Majority" on Sirius XM satellite radio when host Andrew Wilkow said Monday's Supreme Court Hobby Lobby ruling was about "whether or not a person who runs a business should be forced to provide something that is largely for recreational behavior, if it goes against their religious beliefs."

Lee responded, "Yeah, that’s right, that’s right." He then added, "this administration is using the often coercive power of the federal government to force people into their way of being and their way of existing, their way of believing and thinking and acting."

Think Progress reported on the exchange, noted that most women report using contraception for medical and economic reasons.

The website notes that a Guttmacher Institute study found that 60 percent of women have used contraceptives for medical reasons other that preventing pregnancy, such as reducing cramps or menstrual pain, menstrual regulation, treating acne, and treating endometriosis.

Hobby Lobby has said it has no problem paying for 16 types of contraceptives for its employees, but not for four that its evangelical Christian owners believe cause abortion by destroying a fertilized egg. Those four include Plan B and Ella, as well as two IUDs.

Others argue that the four do not cause abortion because they act before the fertilized egg has attached to the uterine wall.
