Senators aren't the only ones "in the weeds" as the nation nears its Oct. 17 debt-ceiling deadline. So is First Lady Michelle Obama's vegetable garden.

The 14-day-old government shutdown has turned the 1,500-square-foot plot at the White House into a weed-ridden mess because gardeners cannot harvest its crops.

The blog Obama Foodorama reported veggies were rotting on the vine and squirrels were eating the debris.

The National Park Service is responsible for maintaining the garden, but its severely reduced workforce has not tended to it beyond as-needed watering.

Overseeing the garden is the executive director of Obama's "Let's Move" campaign, Sam Kass, who has been furloughed since Oct. 1.

More than 30 varieties of vegetables grow in the garden, including pumpkins.
