Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed legislation into law banning medical marijuana on state university and college campuses, according to the Arizona Daily Star. State Rep. Amanda Reeve, who sponsored the bill with broad bipartisan support, said in a statement she was “proud to say we acted swiftly and decisively.”

“With the health and safety of Arizona's students, as well as literally hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, this legislation is critically necessary,” she said.

The law, signed by Brewer on Tuesday, takes effect this summer. According to the Daily Star, it prohibits anyone — including those with state-issued medical marijuana cards — from possessing or using marijuana on the campus of any public university, college, or post-secondary institution.

College officials supported the bill, saying schools are under federal mandate to remain drug-free despite state laws. Arizona’s own medical marijuana law was adopted in 2010.

Reeve said allowing medical marijuana onto campuses could endanger as much as $666 million in federal grants to schools and federal aid to students.

A spokesman for the Arizona Medical Marijuana Association predicted the organization would challenge the constitutionality of the ban.
