Talk show host Rush Limbaugh says leftists and progressives are "conflicted" that Pope Francis would respond to criticism he made about the Pope's statements on money and the economy.

"The media is beside itself. They don't know what to do. They're conflicted," Limbaugh said on his radio show Monday.

"I've never seen the left come to the defense of a Pope or the Catholic Church like I have seen them come to the defense of the Pope and the Catholic Church this time," he said.

Earlier this month, Limbaugh responded to comments Pope Francis had made in an apostolic proclamation in which he criticized trickle-down economics and warned about the "idolatry of money."

Limbaugh called the Pope "dramatically, embarrassingly, puzzlingly wrong," and called his words "pure Marxism."

Response was swift with both praise and criticism of Limbaugh's statements. The Pope responded last weekend to criticism by Limbaugh and other conservatives, saying, "Marxist ideology is wrong," but added he knew many Marxists and they were "good people."

The conflict for the left, Limbaugh explained, is in taking sides between him and the Pope. Even though the Pope's views on abortion and gay marriage run counter to leftist positions, he said their dislike of Limbaugh is greater.

"You know they despise the Catholic Church. They despise it. They despise the Pope. The papacy, not the Pope personally, but just the office. They despise it, because it is the seat of modern morality and judgmentalism," Limbaugh explained.

Yet, Limbaugh said the media's "jealousy, envy, hatred" for him had "driven them into the arms of the Pope." The fact that the Pope acknowledged Limbaugh by responding to him made the media "livid," he said.

"They're ticked off that the Pope acknowledged me, and responded, no matter what he said. That's not the point. The fact that he responded ticks them off," Limbaugh said.

Limbaugh joked that he was helping to bring leftists and progressives to the Catholic Church.

"Rush Limbaugh, leading more leftists to the Catholic Church, leading more progressive leftists to the teachings of the Catholic Church than any modern media figure," he said.
