Corzine's Son, 31, Took Own Life in Mexico, Family Says

By Drew MacKenzie   |

Former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine's youngest son, Jeffrey, committed suicide in Mexico after having battled depression for many years, a family spokesman has confirmed.

Corzine, 31, who died in Mexico on March 11, also battled substance abuse and had spent time in a California treatment center, according to NJ.com.

"The sad fact is that Jeffrey Corzine had been suffering from severe depression for several years and recently had been receiving treatment for what is a very painful and debilitating physical and mental ailment," spokesman Steven Goldberg said in a statement. "On Tuesday morning, he succumbed to his disease and made the tragic decision to take his own life.

"Among many things, the Corzine family hopes Jeffrey will be remembered for his dedication to helping others overcome their struggles with depression and addiction, something to which he had been devoted for the past 10 years."

Corzine, whose father and mother, Joanne, divorced in 2003, had listed his home as Malibu, Calif., on his Facebook account.

A photograph posted on Facebook showed him with President Barack Obama, who campaigned for his father's re-election as governor in 2009. Jon Corzine, a Democrat, was defeated by Republican Chris Christie.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Gov. Corzine, Joanne, and the entire Corzine family," Christie said. "They are both devoted parents and the loss they have suffered is unthinkable."

The family plans "a small, private memorial service," Goldberg said,  adding that "they ask that people respect their privacy during this difficult time as they mourn the loss of Jeffrey."
