Toronto Mayor Rob Ford appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Monday night, and while Kimmel mostly went for laughs, he also offered the admitted crack cocaine user some sobering advice.

"If you are an alcoholic, listen, if you're drinking enough that you can try crack in your 40s and you don't remember it, maybe that's something you might want to think about, like talking to somebody," Kimmel said.

Story continues below video.

Ford laughed, and responded, "I wasn't elected to be perfect, Jimmy. I was elected to clean up a mess."

Kimmel told Ford he could tell that his brother, who traveled to Los Angeles with Ford, really loved him and that he seemed like a nice person.

"It's nothing to be ashamed of," Kimmel said. "And I think it's a good example for other people who might be in a similar situation. No commitment. That's just how I feel about it."

Ford didn't respond to the advice, instead saying the voters will decide on his future in his re-election bid in October.

At one point, Kimmel paused the interview to wipe Ford's forehead with a tissue because he was sweating so profusely.

Ford spent three segments on the show, as Kimmel showed videos of him that have sparked scandal. In one, he threatens to violently kill someone. In others, he is dancing or invoking a Jamaican accent.

Kimmel also read messages from Toronto residents who were angered that Kimmel had invited Ford onto the show. Facebook and Twitter messages called Ford an "embarrassment of a mayor" and brought up domestic abuse, drunken driving, racism and "homophobia."

"Is that all I got?" Ford asked.

"No, you got a lot of them," Kimmel answered. "You may have set a record."

Ford spent much of the interview defending his record and more than once indicated that he was working for Kimmel and members of the American audience because they are all taxpayers.
