Sen. Sessions: Lady Gaga Shows How Addictive Marijuana Is

Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions quoted an unexpected source to support his position during a hearing Wednesday with Attorney General Eric Holder on the dangers of making marijuana legal.

Mediaite reports that Sessions trotted out comments by Lady Gaga about getting hooked on smoking marijuana, saying that if the flamboyant "Born Brave" pop singer says it's addictive, that's one more reason for the federal government to ban marijuana use.

"Well, Lady Gaga said she is addicted to it," Sessions said.

In November, Lady Gaga told a morning radio show that at one point she was smoking 15 to 20 joints a day as "a form of self-medication" that was "related to anxiety coping," People magazine reported.

Sessions called the hearing in light of President Barack Obama's recent interview with The New Yorker magazine on his take about marijuana.

It's "a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don't think it is more dangerous than alcohol," the president was quoted as saying.

Sessions said he was "heartbroken" over Obama's remarks.

"Did the president make, conduct, any scientific survey before he waltzed into The New Yorker and opined contrary to the position of attorney generals [sic] and presidents universally prior to that?” Sessions rhetorically asked Holder. "Did he study any of this data before he made that statement?”

Sessions added, "I just think it's a huge issue. I hope that you will talk with the president, you're close with him, and begin to push back, or pull back, on this position that I think is going to be adverse to the health of America."

Sessions also cited medical research that shows marijuana impairs the "neuro-cognitive performance" of minors' brains.

Holder insisted that one of the federal government's enforcement priorities will be "the prevention of marijuana [sales] to minors"
