House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa is blasting the Justice Department for what he calls its failure to prosecute government employees who may have improperly accessed the tax records of political candidates or donors.

"We are not just disappointed, but dismayed," Issa told The Washington Times, referring to its report that the Treasury inspector general for tax administration had found at least four cases, one of them willful, where candidate or donor information had been pilfered.

The California Republican took issue with Justice for failing to pursue any of the cases laid out by inspector general, telling the newspaper, "Justice will almost always say that they go after cases where they get a conviction, but as you know, they certainly go after a great many cases in which conviction is unlikely."

The Washington Times also reported that former Republican Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell of Delaware received a voicemail message this year from a Treasury Department official notifying her that her "personal federal tax information may have been compromised and may have been misused by an individual."

O'Donnell said she has tried to find out what happened, but investigators told her the probe had been closed and they could not say any more.

Issa told the newspaper there should be a way for victims of such incidents to know how their rights have been violated.

“It should not be complicated for a victim to find out that he is a victim and to be given information related to the misconduct so he can seek remedies,” he said.
