Yet another survey shows danger lurking for Democrats. In a poll by The Hill in 10 closely contested congressional districts, 61 percent of likely independent voters say the Democratic leadership in Congress is more liberal than they are.

Pelosi, Reid, independents, liberalOnly 16 percent of these respondents believe House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid hold views close to their own.

Given the extreme importance of independent voters, this is very positive news for the GOP as it seeks to regain control of Congress.

“That’s a very significant finding that tells you where independents are likely to go,” says Mark Penn, president of Penn Schoen Berland, which conducted the poll. “In terms of independents, Reid and Pelosi are viewed as out of step.”

Even among Democrats, 23 percent of respondents see Reid and Pelosi as more left-wing than themselves.
