An illegal alien released from detention under President Barack Obama's "catch and release" policy has been arrested and charged with the brutal murder of his girlfriend and the kidnapping of three children.

Pedro Alberto Monterroso-Navas, 43, an undocumented Honduran native, is facing second degree murder charges. Police say he bludgeoned his girlfriend, Heidy Monroy, 24, to death in Metairie, La., and fled with three out of five children living with them to a trailer park in Katy, Tx., USA Today reports.

Monroy was found in a bathtub in her home after her other two children, 5 and 8, ran to neighbors seeking help. She was unconscious when found by police but died in the apartment shortly afterwards.

"Unless he fights extradition to Jefferson Parish, he will be returned here to face a second-degree murder charge," Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office public information officer Col. John Fortunato told USA Today.

Breitbart News discovered that Monterosso-Navas was picked up at the McAllen Station of the US Border Patrol in Texas, and issued registration number 2020277386 on June 14, with two children he said were his. Under current policies affecting unaccompanied minors and incomplete families, he was released with a "notice to appear" at a future immigration hearing.

Police were able to track him down after a local resident told them his 12-year-old daughter had called her daughter from Texas, the Huffington Post reports.

The case has bolstered those who argue that illegal aliens are responsible for a disproportionate amount of violent crime in the US and that too many illegal aliens with criminal records are being set free under the "catch and release" policy.

Roll Call reports Iowa Republican Rep. Steven King said in a House speech, "There's not a day that goes by in this country that there isn't at least one American citizen that dies at the hands of someone who's unlawfully present in the United States. We cannot allow the rule of law to be torn apart because we have sympathy for certain people. Let's have sympathy for Americans first."

In a report from the Center for Immigration Studies, authored by Jessica M. Vaughan, director of policy studies, she concluded, "We know from experience and from empirical evidence that releasing illegal aliens who have already been involved in crime leads to more crime and more victims."

Citing a 2012 House Judiciary Committee study, she said, "This analysis found that 26,000 illegal aliens who were released instead of removed went on to commit another 58,000 crimes soon after release. These additional crimes included 59 murders, 21 attempted murders, more than 4,000 major felonies and other 1,000 other violent crimes."
