San Francisco environmentalists want "global warming" warning labels put on gas pumps, similar to the surgeon generals warning on a pack of cigarettes.
"Human beings are not really wired for seeing the cause and effect of climate change," said Jamie Brooks, with the San Francisco area chapter of the environmental group 350.org, the San Francisco Chronicle reported
"The cause is burning fossil fuels, but we're not going to feel the effects until well into the future," Brooks said. "There's no immediate signal to a consumer of gasoline to show their effects on climate."
To keep drivers informed on the alleged affect their use of fossil fuels has on the climate, 350.org proposes putting labels on gas pumps to encourage consumers to reduce the amount of gasoline they use.
"The goal isn't to take transportation away from people and say, 'You're a bad person,'" Brooks said. "The goal is to create a signal saying, 'You need to change your behavior.'"
The group is targeting city governments to adopt the labels, which have the authority to do so. Brooks said that 350.org members have already met with city officials in Berkeley and San Francisco, and they have plans to meet with Oakland officials, as well.
