President Barack Obama will have a much better chance for legislative deal making and grand bargains if he follows Bill Clinton's example, according to GOP Senator Ted Cruz.

“If you look back two years ago, after President Obama faced a loss of the House of Representatives — an overwhelming election result in 2010 — President Obama didn’t do what Bill Clinton had done when the same thing happened to him, which is move to the center, work with Republicans in the House, have a balanced budget, reform welfare,” Cruz said. “Instead, President Obama two years ago doubled down and went even further left to more spending, more debt, more taxes,” reports Politico.

Cruz said he hoped that Obama would do what he spoke about in his campaign victory speech Tuesday in Chicago, which contained much about governing together and compromising to keep the country moving forward.

“You elected us to focus on your jobs, not ours,” Obama said. “And in the coming weeks and months, I am looking forward to reaching out and working with leaders of both parties to meet the challenges we can only solve together. Reducing our deficit. Reforming our tax code. Fixing our immigration system. Freeing ourselves from foreign oil. We've got more work to do.”

Obama said that he has listened to the entire country, not just the half that voted for him, and he understands that compromise to move forward on big issues is what voters want more than anything else — which he is dedicated to delivering. “Tonight, you voted for action, not politics as usual.”

Cruz said he thinks many Republicans will work with him if he delivers on the promises of the victory speech to actually work with the opposition party, but is prepared for it to not happen.

“If he doesn’t mean what he says, if that was simply what he says on the campaign trail, and he wants to go back to the path of the last four years: to more and more spending and debt and taxes and regulations that kill jobs, then I will do everything I can to work to stop us from continuing down that path,” Cruz said.
