Conservatives are doing more than fighting for what type of government America will have, says clinical psychologist Tim Daughtry, they are fighting for "what kind of people we are."

Daughtry, co-author of "The Sleeping Giant: How Mainstream America Can Beat Liberals at Their Own Game,"  told The Daily Caller that if conservatives don't change the narrative and start putting liberals on defense, "then we will be the last generation of Americans to know what America was."

Americans must decide whether they are a Judeo-Christian people who believe in rights of the individual, private property rights and diversity, he said. Do people believe rights come from a creator or from government, he asked.

Conservatives must realize it is useless to control the government if they don't control the culture, "because our freedom is based our Judeo-Christian foundations," he said.

Government is the tip of iceberg, he said. The real battle should be for cultural institutions, which are currently held by the left, he said. Big donors should realize they should be funding these institutions in order to regain control.

The right, Daughtry said, has been focused on winning the next election while left has been focused on winning next generation.

The left’s strategy has always been gradualism, he said.

"It’s been the long march through the institutions, so they have gradually worn away the Constitution, they have gradually worn away liberty," Daughtry said.

"What happened after 2008 was the long march became a blitzkrieg. I mean, they came full bore. They really picked up speed and I think they didn’t anticipate that mainstream America … was going to get off the lawn mower and get into politics, and say, 'Wait a minute, we’re going in the wrong direction here.'"
