Rasmussen Poll: Obama, Congress Don't Work Hard Enough

Thursday, 14 Aug 2014 05:01 PM

By Greg Richter

Voters are not impressed with the work ethic of President Barack Obama and Congress, according to a new poll from Rasmussen Reports.

Likely voters were about evenly divided when asked whether Obama works harder than they do. Forty-three percent said the president works harder than they do, but 42 percent said he doesn't. Fifteen percent were unsure.

Congress fared far lower, with only 10 percent of voters saying Congress works harder than they do. Seventy-six percent think Congress does not work as hard as they do.

Obama has been criticized for taking a two-week vacation while multiple crises grip the world. To a lesser degree, Congress has faced criticism for taking five weeks off without passing immigration legislation.

The poll showed that 37 percent believe Obama spends too much time on vacation, while 49 percent don't think he does. Seventy percent think Congress spends too much time on vacation, with only 16 percent disagreeing.

Twenty percent think the country would be better off if Congress met less often, while 28 percent think it would be worse. Almost half, 45 percent, don't believe it matters either way.

Obama has come under fire from Republicans for his use of executive actions when Congress does not pass laws he has proposed. The poll showed that 55 percent don't want the government to do things unless Congress and the president agree. Thirty-five percent believe it is acceptable for Obama to act alone if Congress will not.

The survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted August 12-13. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.
