A victory by President Barack Obama on Tuesday is nothing more than “a popularity contest,” former GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain charged in an exclusive interview with Newsmax TV.

“That is a sad state for the United States of America to elect a president based upon popularity and not based upon results,” Cain, the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, told Newsmax after the polls closed. “This is a divided nation and that is bad.

“Barack Obama was supposed to be a president who was supposed to be a uniter instead of a divider. He has been a divider.

“It also is a referendum on the fact that a lot of people really don’t know what the issues are,” Cain added. “They really don’t know what the challenges – and Barack Obama, if in fact he wins, he would have won on a popularity contest.”

Despite a late challenge by the Mitt Romney campaign to the voting results in Ohio, Cain still believes that the former Massachusetts governor can still win the Buckeye State.

“I still think he can pull it off – and primarily because when you look at some of the voting patterns from the past in some of these key states, like Ohio and Florida and North Carolina, it’s just too early to call,” he said. “The fact that it is still close is a good indication that Mitt Romney can still pull it off.”

He also still believes that 80 percent of African Americans backed Obama solely because of his race.

“Twenty percent of the African-American vote, they’re going to vote based on the fact that they know that this country needs a new direction. But, unfortunately, 80 percent of them are going to vote for him simply because he’s black.”

But, perhaps, Obama’s biggest support came from the mainstream media, Cain said.

“They’ve been a big help to Barack Obama in this election, regardless of the output. Primarily because the stories that they should have been reporting on, like the Benghazi cover up, they simply chose not to.

“Instead of them reporting on the real unemployment rate, they have been satisfied with reporting on the fabricated unemployment rate – the real unemployment rate that’s much greater than 7.9 percent,” Cain added. “You have not heard one mainstream media outlet – ABC, CBS, or NBC – report on the real unemployment rate of the black community, which has not gone up a 10th of a point within the last four years. It has gone up by whole points, to where it’s now almost 15 percent.

“So, yes, there is no doubt that the mainstream media has been in the back pocket of President Obama in order to keep information from the public.”
