Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey proposed to his girlfriend Alicia Mucci in the Capitol Rotunda Monday night.

Their engagement took place before they headed off to the White House Congressional Ball, where they celebrated the occasion, NY Daily News reports.

Mike Allen of Politico broke the news Tuesday morning.

The New Jersey Democrat sent out a thank you message on his Twitter account Tuesday morning, after receiving congratulations from fellow Senate colleague Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

"Thanks to my family & friends for their love & congrats," Menendez wrote.

Menendez has two adult children from a previous marriage, which ended in 2005.

He was accused of being involved with an underage prostitute in the Dominican Republic when he traveled there with a political donor in 2010. Menendez continues to deny the allegations.
