An Ohio archbishop has launched an ambitious TV and radio advertising campaign in his community urging wayward Catholics to return to the church.

“Sometimes people drift away from the church because they simply don’t understand the teachings of the church,” Cincinnati Archbishop Dennis Schnurr told The Cincinnati Enquirer.

“We miss you. Please come home.”

Schnurr said the media blitz is inspired by Pope Benedict XVI, who last month proclaimed the beginning of a “Year of Faith’’ — an international effort to combat “the advance of a spiritual ‘desertification’’ and rediscover “the joy of believing.’’

One ad begins: “If you’ve been away from the Catholic Church, we invite you to take another look.”

The $200,000 campaign — paid for through special collections taken up this year at churches in the Cincinnati archdiocese — will include the airing of more than 3,000 commercials in the greater Cincinnati area from December 14th through January 20th.

About two out of three Catholics in the Cincinnati area, some 300,000 parishioners, do not regularly attend Mass, according to the Enquirer.

The ads were produced by Tom Peterson, founder and president of the non-profit group Catholics Come Home.

“Our invitation is simple: We are Catholic. Welcome home,’’ Peterson told The Catholic Telegraph. He said similar ad campaigns used by other American dioceses have helped increase church attendance

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati is the 38th largest Catholic diocese in the United States with almost 500,000 members.
