Author and syndicated columnist Diana West tells Newsmax TV that the U.S. "whitewashed" Communism long before it took a similar approach in dealing with radical Islamists following the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.

"I never imagined that I would find a parallel situation in good old World War II where I discovered that the United States government was whitewashing Communism just as I would argue the American government has been whitewashing Islam in our own period," asserted West in an exclusive interview on Thursday. "This is a national tragedy and a national scandal that we have yet to reckon with."

Story continues below.

West, whose latest book is titled, "American Betrayal: The Secret Assault on Our Nation’s Character," argues that the U.S. was home to as many as 500 Soviet agents working for Joseph Stalin during the 1930s and 40s — well before the recognized start of the Cold War.

Contrary to many spy novels, most of the agents were not looking to steal secrets.

"They definitely influenced our policy during World War II," she said. "They were born here — many of them if not most of them — but they were here to influence policy."
Based on her research, she insists that World War II could have ended two years earlier — in 1943 instead of 1945 – if the agents had not been allowed to influence U.S. policy.
"The more pernicious effect of espionage is the influence artist, the shaping of policy, the tipping of certain personnel into strategic positions," she observed.

"What we see is that the war had to go on in the eyes of the agents minds — had to go on to a certain point to bring the Soviet Union into Europe — and what I discovered, that a good target point for a more reasonable ending to the war — had this Communist penetration not been there — was around 1943, which would eliminate the need for D-Day, which was my father’s first entry into the war."

Her late father, Elliott West, became ill and was not able to continue on to the Battle of the Bulge, where many of his fellow soldiers were killed.

West discovered a similar pattern of information manipulation in present day America, where public officials from the White House on down have been attempting to portray Islam as a religion of peace since 9/11.

"Where Islam spreads other religions disappear, or are basically enslaved," said West. "The government tells us Islam is a religion of peace and then . . . every fact that does not support Islam being a religion of peace is no longer welcome in the public square."

She said that the Department of Justice and the Pentagon have both taken steps to remove any contrary facts from all training and analysis.

"There is no enemy threat doctrine taught that relates to Islam any longer," she observed.
West came across another similarity between Communism and radical Islam when she discovered that the Russian foreign minister back in 1943 developed a list of anti-Communist officials he asked to have removed from U.S. government service.

"These were officials at the State Department — and I know it’s shocking right there to think that anti-Communist officials were ever in the State Department — but they were,"
she explained. "They had assembled these dossiers, these files, these libraries and experience. They were supposed to be sent away, purged — and indeed they were."

In 2011, she said, some 57 Muslim groups approached then chief counterterrorism adviser to President Barack Obama, John Brennan, who is now serving as director of the CIA, with a similar request.

They presented him with a list of training materials, trainers that they wanted to see "purged" from government agencies, according to West, who said that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs subsequently ordered all "anti-Islamic materials" to be removed from the military.

"There were even demands in the letter to Brennan that trainers be punished who were not properly re-educated," West explained. "We are getting very far into this notion of re-education and this goes back even in the modern sense it is an Islamic influence — but what we’re looking at however is the tricks of Marxism, Leninism."

She added that Marx and Lenin believed public discourse could be used to manipulate public thought.

"Meanwhile, our National Security Agency . . . is vacuuming up every single American’s personal information — phone mails, emails and all of that," she observed.

"And they have excluded the study of Islam, which is an animating force behind 99 percent of the terrorism that we’re worried about."

A case in point came in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, according to West, who said that the U.S. government knowingly hired jihadists to perform security before the attack.

"We had in a sense aligned ourselves with the very same people we know from various studies, were actually a year or two or three earlier in Iraq killing Americans," she said, blaming the decision on an ideological shift. "Isn’t that the scandal that should be investigated?"

Moreover, while most scholars believe the Cold War ended in 1991 with the fall of the Soviet Union, West said that remnants of the former super power can still be found throughout Europe.

"We should be very worried. It’s a very murky subject but I think there are great arguments to be made that much of the force of the old Soviet Union — the secret police, the military ambitions — remain and indeed we see many of the people who are prominent in the old days throughout Europe, even in the E.U. government still prominent today."
