Gloria Allred Takes on San Diego Mayor in Harassment Case

Tuesday, 23 Jul 2013 02:11 PM

By Courtney Coren

Famed lawyer Gloria Allred is representing the first woman to come forward to file sexual harassment charges against San Diego Mayor Bob Filner.

Irene McCormack Jackson, the mayor's former communications director, announced her lawsuit Monday against the San Diego mayor in a press conference with Allred by her side, Politico reports.

Allred has served as attorney to several female accusers against powerful men in many high-profile cases in the past.

Her clients have included Sharon Bialek, the woman who accused former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain of sexual harassment, the family of O.J. Simpson's late wife Nicole Simpson, and Rachel Uchitel, one of Tiger Wood's mistresses.

Allred called on Filner to resign as mayor, and she also encouraged other Filner victims to come forward.

"We think that silence only favors the wrongdoer and not the victims," she added.

McCormack Jackson says that Filner made several inappropriate comments to her such as, "When are you going to get naked?" "I would do a better job if you kissed me," and "Wouldn't it be great if you took off your panties and worked without them on?"

"I am coming forward today to lay the blame at the feet of the person responsible, Mayor Bob Filner," said McCormack Jackson of the sexual harassment charges she had just detailed. "He is not fit to be mayor of our great city. He is not fit to hold any public office."

She also claims that the mayor tried to kiss her and that his behavior made her "feel ashamed, frightened, and violated."

"For some of what we stated, there were witnesses," Allred said at the press conference.

Filner issued a response to the allegations Monday.

"I do not believe these claims are valid," the San Diego mayor said. "That is why due process is so important. I intend to defend myself vigorously and I know that justice will prevail."

Former City Councilwoman, Donna Frye, held two press conferences earlier this month in which she first announced the sexual harassment allegations and then later detailed the claims of at least two women who claimed that Filner had tried to kiss them.
