An Alabama teen was arrested after a teacher found his journal detailing plans to bomb the high school.

Derek Mathew Shrout, 17, is being charged with attempted assault after allegedly detailing plans to bomb six fellow students and a teacher, WRBL News 3 reports, beginning his journal just three days after the attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.

Although the teen claimed his entries weren’t true, law enforcement officials were given permission by Shrout’s parents to search his room and found 27 tins filled with BB bullet-like items. All had a hole drilled in them, although they did not find explosives.

"The first thing I wanted to know was if you did exactly what he wrote, would it blow up? And everybody that I've consulted with has said that it would absolutely blow up exactly the way he wrote it,” Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said.

Five of the six students that Shrout targeted are black and the teen admitted to being a white supremacist, CBS News reports.

"At first through JROTC, he was confident, well-rounded, but as time went by, he was doing the whole white power thing," David Kelly, Shrout’s battalion commander, told WTVM.

The Associated Press reports that Shrout appeared in court Monday and the judge set his bond at $75,000. His lawyer, Jeremy Armstrong, said he thinks the case has been “blown a little out of proportion.”
