ABC News is defending the selection of correspondent Martha Raddatz to serve as moderator of tomorrow night’s vice presidential debate, despite the fact an inherent conflict of interest is evident following reports that President Barack Obama attended Raddatz’s wedding.
Responding to media reports that Obama was one of the guests who had attended Raddatz’s wedding, the network issued a statement.
“This is absurd,” the statement said. “Martha Raddatz is known for her tough, fair reporting, which is why it was no surprise to her colleagues inside and outside ABC News that she was chosen by the Commission on President Debates for this assignment.”
ABC’s statement also noted that Obama was a Harvard law school classmate of Genachowski when the wedding took place, pointing out that as president of the law review, Obama “attended their wedding over two decades ago along with nearly the entire Law Review, many of whom went onto successful careers including some in the Bush administration.”
Raddatz married Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski in1991.
Raddatz divorced Genachowski in 1997 and is now married to National Public Radio correspondent Tom Gjelten.
She is slated to moderate the vice presidential debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Rep. Paul Ryan tomorrow evening in Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.
