Women Breaking Barriers in Navy, Not SEALs Yet

Monday, 30 May 2011 08:41 AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — America's last 10 years of war have propelled women into new and riskier roles across the military, but there are still some doors that are closed. Chief among those are the special operations forces.

But perhaps that door is cracking open.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus says there shouldn't be any career that's closed off to women.

He says that although there is a ban on women in combat and infantry jobs, more women are working with special operations forces in support roles.

And he doesn't rule out the idea that a qualified woman could eventually become an elite commando.

Still, he says it will take time.
