1 Week after Blizzard, NYC Garbage Is Piled High

NEW YORK (AP) — One week after a blizzard struck New York City, the snowdrifts are melting but the mountains of trash are growing.

The Department of Sanitation is preparing to resume garbage pickups Monday for the first time since the Christmas weekend storm dumped 20 inches of snow on city streets. Trash collection was suspended while crews struggled to plow streets.

There's no word on when the city will start collecting recyclables again.

Garbage bins outside many apartment buildings are overflowing. Bags of recyclables including beer bottles and milk cartons are stacked helter-skelter along with discarded Christmas trees and wreaths.

Manhattan pizzeria owner Merilu Granato says she's angry about the piles of trash. She calls it "a very ugly scene."
