After Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was criticized for his budget that cut spending and his move to eliminate collective bargaining for public employees, his policies may be starting to pay dividends. The state’s unemployment rate dipped to 7.3 percent, the Wisconsin Business News reported Friday.

So far this year, the state has added 24,900 private-sector jobs, including 11,500 in manufacturing. Preliminary figures show the private sector added 3,000 jobs in April. That pushed the unemployment rate down from 7.4 percent in March to 7.3 percent in April.

“With each month, Wisconsin’s economy is growing stronger under Governor Walker’s leadership, and job seekers are taking notice,” said Department of Workforce Development interim Secretary Scott Baumbach.

An additional 10,900 individuals entered the labor force during the month of April, eager to take advantage of the growing job opportunities, including more than 28,000 jobs posted on the agency’s website, Baumbach said.

“Wisconsin is open for business, employers are looking to hire, and job seekers are optimistic and entering the labor market,” Baumbach said.

Walker said the hard work has improved Wisconsin business climate.

“Nearly 25,000 Wisconsinites are back to work since we declared Wisconsin open for business in January, with 11,500 of those jobs in manufacturing,” he said. “That is good for middle class working families and it is good for Wisconsin. We are on our way to 250,000 jobs by 2015, but there is more work to be done in order to meet and surpass that goal.”
