Fire officials say one person is dead in a shooting at an entrance gate to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla.

Tampa Fire Rescue officials say they were called to the gate at 6:47 p.m. on Wednesday.

Tampa police and MacDill base security are investigating. MacDill spokeswoman Airman Katherine Holt says more information would be available within the hour.

MacDill is located south of downtown Tampa. It is home to U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East and Central Asia.

There wasn't much activity outside the base Wednesday evening. Tampa police said in a statement they will take direction from MacDill on what information is released.
