Mitt Romney’s substantial net worth would not impress the Founding Fathers or some other folks who ran for president for that matter.
The former Massachusetts governor has a net worth estimated at between $190 and $250 million. Even at the high end, he’s not in the same league as George Washington.
Washington’s worth, mostly tied up in his vast plantation at Mount Vernon, is estimated in today’s dollars at more than $500 million, The Washington Post’s blog
The Fix reports.
Romney would probably feel at home with Thomas Jefferson, though, whose estimated worth is put at over $200 million. The wealthiest candidate to run for president was the billionaire Ross Perot followed by Steve Forbes who was worth about $450 million, according to the Post.
The Democratic candidate in 2004, Sen. John Kerry, had an estimated wealth of somewhere between $200 and $300 million and his wife, Theresa Heinz, has an estimated worth of about $1 billion.
The Post also notes that should he have lived, President John F. Kennedy would have inherited his father’s fortune, estimated at a billion dollars.
