Abortion rates among African-American teenagers are more than twice the national average, according to a new study.

The African-American abortion rate is 41 per 1,000 women who are 15 to 19 years old, according to the study by the Guttmacher Institute and reported on Monday in the Atlanta Black Star newspaper.

That compares with a national average of 18 per 1,000 women in the same age group, the Star reports.

In addition, the rate is four times higher than the teen abortion rate among non-Hispanic whites.

That rate is 10 per 1,000 women — and the abortion rate of Hispanic teens is 20 per 1,000, the Star reports.

Guttmacher’s state-by-state study also showed that in states with high abortion rates, teenage pregnancy among African-Americans has the most likelihood of ending in an abortion than in any other racial or ethnic group, the Star reports.

In New York, for instance, pregnancies among black teens — excluding miscarriages — are 67 percent more likely to end in abortion, the Star reports.

New York has the nation’s highest teenage abortion rate, according to the Guttmacher study.
