NEW YORK (AP) — A case of political intrigue that features New York's billionaire mayor as victim is headed for trial.
Jury selection is set to start Monday for Republican campaign consultant John Haggerty's trial. He's charged with stealing $1.2 million from Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
A person familiar with the case tells The Associated Press that Bloomberg is on the prosecutors' witness list, though it's unclear whether he will be called to testify. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss aspects of the case not yet made public.
Prosecutors say Haggerty got then-candidate Bloomberg to give the state Independence Party $1.2 million for a 2009 poll-watching effort. They say Haggerty then used most of the money instead to buy himself a house.
Haggerty says he did the job he was paid for.
