Gun Backlash May Have Helped End Morgan's CNN Show

This week's announcement that CNN is ending "Piers Morgan Live" is prompting speculation that the British journalist's campaign for gun control may have been the main cause of the show's failure.

"Morgan undoubtedly alienated many in the audience (and perhaps delighted others) with his crusade against guns. But when he would bring on gun advocates and rail against them as 'stupid,' well, it was hard to watch," Howard Kurtz, host of Fox News' "Media Buzz,"  wrote on the cable channel's website.
It is expected that Morgan will end the show in March. He took the job in 2011 to replace Larry King.

Kurtz also suggested that Morgan's "political advocacy sliced at the heart of CNN's brand."

And the network's decision to end the program was also shaped by its poor ratings.

Last Wednesday, for example, "Piers Morgan Tonight" came in third place among its competitors in terms of viewership, with just 345,000 viewers, compared to 860,000 for MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show" and 2.06 million for Fox News' "The Kelly File," according to Fox.

Morgan himself suggested that his controversial approach to covering the gun control issue may have been at the root of his plummeting popularity.

"It’s been a painful period and lately we have taken a bath in the ratings," Morgan told David Carr of The New York Times.

"Look, I am a British guy debating American cultural issues, including guns, which has been very polarizing, and there is no doubt that there are many in the audience who are tired of me banging on about it,” he said

Meanwhile, it appears that Morgan's own staff is happy to see him go, according to a report by the New York Daily News.

"He was always such an a------ to people working for him," one insider told the newspaper. "The make-up girls suffered the worst — he was rude and belligerent. The general feeling is Morgan didn't show any respect to anyone working under him — the people who were trying to make him look good."
