Conditions at Occupy DC encampments continue to deteriorate. Sounds of a crying baby at Washington’s McPherson Square encampment prompted an investigation that led to an arrest of a man on child cruelty charges, The Washington Post’s blog The Crime Scene reported.

Fellow campers found the lightly-dressed infant unattended in a tent and contacted authorities. D.C. emergency workers checked on the child and found her to be fine. The baby’s father showed up about a half hour later and was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree cruelty to children, the Post reported.

U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. David Schlosser said the child is now with the District’s child protective services department. “Mid 40s, rainy, Onesie, alone,” Schlosser said, describing the circumstances that led to the arrest, the Post reported.

Other members of the encampment told the Post the unidentified arrested man showed up within the past week, with one person adding, “It was a despicable, atrocious thing do. Everyone here is revolted by the behavior.”

City health inspectors have recently found the two Occupy DC sites to be infested with rats. D.C.’s Department of Health Director Mohammad Akhter, a Pakistan native, likened the situation to refugee camps in foreign countries he has visited.
