Obama Tweet Supports Texas Pro-Abortion 'Mob'

Wednesday, 26 Jun 2013 09:23 AM

By Lisa Barron

President Barack Obama sent out a Twitter message supporting the mob rule that thwarted GOP attempts to toughen abortion rules in Texas.

"Something special is happening in Austin tonight: #StandWithWendy," the tweet, which was sent during the ninth hour of Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis' planned 13-hour filibuster against the bill.

Davis was joined by some 400 protesters in the chamber, and their chanting delayed the vote. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst could not get it taken before a midnight deadline, so the measure automatically failed despite a 19-10 vote in favor.

"I didn't lose control (of the chamber). We had an unruly mob," Dewhurst said.

The measure would have banned abortions after 20 weeks and limited a woman's access to medically-induced abortions across the state. It would have closed all but five of the state's 42 clinics where abortions are performed.

Republican leaders are vowing to bring back the bill and were awaiting word Wednesday from Gov. Rick Perry, who is considering whether to call a special session specifically to put the legislation back on the Senate floor.
