The Navy quickly reversed course on a policy ordering military chapels to be used for same-sex marriages. Navy Chief of Chaplains Rear Adm. Mark Tidd now says the policy is on hold pending legal and policy review, The Washington Post reported.

The policy that would have applied in the handful of states where gay marriage is legal caused an uproar in Congress and among social conservatives. Tidd said in an April 13 memo that the policy would go into effect when the don’t ask, don’t tell ban on gays openly serving in the military ended.

The memo noted that Navy chaplains would not be required to officiate at the ceremonies. Despite the change of course, military officials told the Post that gay service members may eventually be married in military chapels.

GOP members of the House Armed Services Committee are expected to introduce amendments to the annual defense bill to ban use of military chapels for same-sex marriages — even if allowed under state law where a base is located — and bar military chaplains from officiating, the Post reported.
