A strict Muslim tracked down his stepdaughter over four states so he could kill her for bringing dishonor on her family, allege police in Warren, Mich. Rahim Alfetlawi tracked Jessica Mokdad, 20, down from his house in Minnesota and killed her on Saturday in Warren, according to Fox’s Detroit affiliate.

"He's a strict Muslim; she was more Americanized," Warren Police Detective Lt. Michael Torey said.

Mokdad had escaped to Michigan to get away from her mother’s overbearing husband and to live her own life, friends say.

"She just wants to express herself the way she wants and not what he wants," said friend Kayla Chuba.

Alfetlawi became enraged when Mokdad stopped wearing the traditional Muslim headscarf, friends say. So Mokdad packed her belongings, hid them in a bush outside her home in Coon Creek, Minn., and told her stepfather she was putting out the garbage. She grabbed her stuff and fled 700 miles through Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana to Michigan.

But Alfetlawi kept calling. “It would just seem like he had just like some sick obsession. It wasn't just like a stepfather-daughter relationship,” one of Mokdad’s friends said. “It was something else."

He eventually tracked her to her grandmother’s home in Warren and traveled there. He told police they had an argument and his stepdaughter felt his gun in his waistband. They both reached for it, and it went off by accident, he claimed.

Police do not believe his story and charged Alfetlawi with first-degree murder after he turned himself in.

Mokdad’s mom, Wendy, has no sympathy for her husband. "He was too overbearing, over-controlling — things I thought that were just normal, strict parenting really. Now, when I look back, I say no, it was too much."

She said she is glad Michigan does not have the death penalty. “That would be too easy. I want him to suffer everyday just like she suffered," she said.
