New Hampshire officials have launched a review of state voting procedures, after a number of people obtained ballots by giving the names of dead voters to poll workers during the state’s presidential primary on Tuesday, according to the New Hamphire Union Leader.

The newspaper said no fraudulent votes were actually cast. But in nine instances, the Union Leader reported, poll workers handed over ballots without verifying identification after would-be-voters implied they were the residents — all recently deceased — still listed on the voter checklist.

In each instance, the exchange was recorded without the knowledge of the election personnel, who told the would-be-voters they were not required to show ID in New Hampshire in order to cast their ballots. A video of the exchanges was produced and posted on YouTube later by Project Veritas, the national organization that ensnared ACORN in a registration scandal.

“We stated the name of a dead person we got from the NH obituaries,” Project Veritas said in a statement about its effort to focus attention on the potential for voter fraud. “The names of the deceased were both registered Republicans and Democrats. And in almost every case, saying a dead person’s name, we were handed a ballot to cast a vote. We used no misrepresentation and no false pretenses. In fact, in almost every case, we insisted we show ID and they insisted that we vote without showing ID.”

New Hampshire Associate Attorney General Richard Head told the Union Leader his office became aware of the Project Veritas actions on election day and began an investigation. He said it was ongoing.

Officials in Nashua and Manchester, where the newspaper said the videos were shot, were not pleased with what they referred to as “stunts” by Project Veritas activists. They pointed out that state law prohibits the use of a false name to obtain a ballot and the recording of an individual without his or her consent.

“They should be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas told the Union Leader.
