People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is part of a broad chorus of dog lovers and fans who are unhappy that the New York Jets football team signed Michael Vick to a $5 million, one-year contract,  the New York Post reported.

The 33 year-old quarterback served almost two years in prison on federal charges of involvement in an interstate dog-fighting ring. After his release, he joined the Philadelphia Eagles and was also mentored by former NFL coach Tony Dungy.

The Jets signed him March 22. Fan Ryan Breslin wrote on the team's Facebook page: "He electrocuted dogs in a bathtub for fun. I'm supposed to root for this guy? As ashamed as I've ever been to be a Jets fan, and that's saying something," the Post reported.

Hundreds of other fans went on to the page to "like" anti-Vick posts such as Stephen Rubeo's: "As long as he is on this team, I will not be a Jets fan."

PETA has been mobilizing on Twitter against Vick, The Wire reported: "At least Michael Vick can't drown, electrocute, hang, or shoot a football the way he terrorized 'man's best friend.'"

ESPN's Michelle Beadle tweeted: "Looks like mama is on the market for a new football team ..."

Vick's brother Marcus countered with an expletive implying that the issue should no longer be a topic for criticism, The Wire reported.

Jets fan Alan Kessler started a "Boycott the NY Jets & Michael Vick" Facebook page that has over 9,000 followers. Kessler said, "Michael Vick has no place in football. He disgusts me," the Post reported.

Some fans on Twitter were more forgiving.

Michael Wells tweeted: "As an animal lover, I also believe in forgiveness, leave him be." Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell joined the mix, tweeting: "Thanks 2 Mike Vick 4 many thrills 4 being great leader and teammate. Also 4 your great work with school kids. Good luck with Jets!"
