President Barack Obama's 2012 campaign manager, Jim Messina, is building his political brand as a strategist and power broker, Politico reported.

His reputation is rooted in having helped get Obama re-elected. Messina has a knack for raising vast sums of political action committee money, and can himself garner enormous speaking fees. He is also paid handsomely to wield influence as a lobbyist.

Some describe the 44-year-old former Capitol Hill staffer and ex-Obama deputy chief of staff as the Democratic answer to Karl Rove, according to Politico.

GOP financier Fred Malek told Politico that Messina should be "flattered to be mentioned in the same breath as Rove" whom he described as motivated by the nobility of the cause and the worthiness of the candidate.

Politico reports that Messina has amassed a vast range of earning power and political influence. He is "building a political fiefdom" that adeptly melds his ties to rich Democrats, the work of his consulting firm, his position with Obama's nonprofit Organizing for Action, and his role with Priorities USA, the foremost Democratic super PAC.

He receives invitations to join corporate boards. Recently, he charged the American Petroleum Institute and the United Arab Emirates considerable speakers fees.

At the same time, Messina is ending a $7,000-a-month consultancy with Obama's still functioning presidential campaign apparatus.

Messina is on track to becoming the "left's leading big-money man and shadow party boss," Politico said.

Besides working on behalf of Hillary Clinton, Messina provides political consultation to select clients, including Florida's Charlie Crist and Maryland Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown, both gubernatorial candidates, as well as to Conservative Party British Prime Minister David Cameron.
