ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says public transportation in New York City will shut down at about noon on Saturday in advance of Hurricane Irene.

According to the governor's office, the Metropolitan Transit Authority will institute a system-wide shutdown when subways and buses begin their final runs starting at approximately noon.

The shutdown will include the Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad and Access-A-Ride.

A hurricane watch is in effect for New York City and Long Island for Sunday, with storm conditions possible Saturday night.

Cuomo's office says major bridges in the city and lower Hudson Valley and the state Thruway will close if sustained wind speeds top 60 miles per hour.
