NY Case Shows Daily Dangers Faced by Hotel Maids

NEW YORK (AP) — The case of a New York City hotel maid who says she was raped by the chief of the International Monetary Fund is bringing new attention to the dangers hotel housekeepers face on the job.

A review of court documents and news reports by The Associated Press has found that at least 10 other hotel housekeepers say they've been attacked in the U.S. in the last three years.

The hazards aren't always sexual. Housekeeper Kimberly Phillips says she was attacked by two dogs last year at a hotel in Kentucky.

Labor groups say other cases are kept quiet because the victims are illegal immigrants or because hotels are wary of scaring off guests.

Many hotels have adopted new safety policies such as barring housekeepers from cleaning rooms while they're occupied.
