The FCC's decision to scrap its controversial plan to monitor newsrooms for fairness came after lawmakers from all political parties realized what a "stupid" idea it was, former Rep. Pete Hoekstra says.

"In all reality, they finally figured out how stupid this proposal was," the Michigan Republican told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Republicans and Democrats actually both agree that this was a really, really dumb idea."

The Federal Communications Commission announced on Friday that it was longer pursuing a study to determine whether media companies are fair in their coverage of the news, particularly stories involving "the underserved."

The plan, announced earlier this week, immediately drew cries of protest that it was in violation of the First Amendment.

John Gizzi, Newsmax's chief political columnist and White House correspondent, agreed with Hoekstra.

"I don't have solid evidence, but my instincts say that what the FCC was talking about had the stench of a ministry of truth right out of George Orwell's '1984' or a ministry of propaganda that controls the media," Gizzi said.

"They decided that they did not want this kind of impression. As the kids say, they weren't going to go there, and pulled back."
