Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert has blamed President Barack Obama’s "lawlessness" for the surge of unaccompanied children illegally crossing into the United States.
During an interview on Fox News’ radio program "The John Gibson Show," the Republican congressman said, "When you refuse to follow the law, you are encouraging law breaking. It’s a massive problem," according to the Houston Chronicle.
The number of illegal minors from Central America, who are mainly in their mid-teens, has soared in south Texas in recent weeks. The Obama administration says that more than 60,000 undocumented unaccompanied children will cross the border this year, the Chronicle said.
The deluge has led the Department of Homeland Security to fly illegals
from Texas to Arizona and dump them at bus stations and makeshift shelters in the state. The administration is also housing illegal minors at military bases in Texas, Oklahoma, and California.
"I think we would be better off helping them get back where they came from," Gohmert said. "They are being put in a humanitarian crisis by coming here and being accepted in droves."
His attack on Obama came as Chris Cabrera, of the National Border Patrol Council, said that "hundreds" of unaccompanied children are turning themselves into Border Patrol officials soon after entering the United States illegally, the Chronicle reported.
"Most of the time, they’re getting released to relatives in the U.S.," Cabrera said, according to the Chronicle. "There’s nowhere to put them, so they’re released on their own recognizance and have a pending court date."
