Feds: Mich. Militia Members Ready to 'Go to War'

Monday, 13 Feb 2012 02:49 PM

A prosecutor says seven members of a Midwest militia accused of planning to attack law enforcement to try to incite rebellion were willing to "go to war."

Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Graveline showed jurors a video clip Monday during opening statements at the militia members' trial in which the group's leader, David Stone, declares "welcome to the revolution."

Stone's attorney, William Swor, told jurors there was no plan to attack the government and that Stone was instead preparing to fight the "anti-Christ."

The seven were among nine members of the group, called Hutaree, arrested in March 2010. Prosecutors say the group discussed killing a police officer at some point, then attacking the officer's funeral procession.

Defense attorneys say the disgruntled militia members merely engaged in boastful talk.
