The brother of first lady Michelle Obama has been fired as basketball coach at Oregon State University.

Craig Robinson had three years left on his contract and Oregon State is expected to owe him more than $4 million, Sports Illustrated reported.

Robinson began his tenure with an 18-win season in 2008-09 as he took a losing team and "put the program on the right track," SI reported.

The hiring and turnaround coincided with the election campaign of his brother-in-law, President Barack Obama — and Robinson introduced his sister at the Democratic National Convention in the summer of 2008.

"From there, Robinson had uneven results in one of the Pac-12's [conference] hardest jobs. He finished with a 39-69 record in Pac-12 play," the magazine reported.

Oregon State fired the head coach Sunday, SI reported.

Oregon State has not reached the NCAA tournament since 1990. The Beavers last won a game in the tournament in 1982.
